SAN FRANCISCO — October 26, 2026. The long-running renovation of Buchanan Street Mall in the Fillmore neighborhood is approaching another major stage, with new paths, seating and recreational equipment installed while construction access restrictions continue.
What’s finished—and what’s not
According to the city’s October 21 construction update, crews have laid more walkway paving and planted additional greenery. New benches, picnic tables, children’s play equipment and adult/senior fitness facilities are now installed. Utility hookups are advancing, and workers are completing remaining paving, landscaping and decorative metalwork for the planned Memory Walk.
But the park has not been announced as fully reopened. Temporary pedestrian detours remain around active work areas, including access from adjacent buildings. The city warns people traveling near the mall to watch for changing routes, flaggers and signs instead of relying on a static map or walking through an unfinished section.
Community stewardship and next steps
The Recreation and Park Department also intends to present its Buchanan Mall Equity Action Plan to the Recreation and Park Commission on November 19 at 10 a.m. in City Hall Room 416. This is a future presentation, not proof the commission has approved a new implementation plan already.
Residents can reach listed project manager Lauren Dietrich Chavez at 628-652-6643 for project updates.
