SAN FRANCISCO — October 26, 2026. A long-planned ecological restoration inside McLaren Park is moving toward construction. San Francisco Recreation and Parks reported October 21 that the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission had identified a contractor and authorized work to begin on the Upper Yosemite Creek Daylighting Project.
What does daylighting a creek mean?
Portions of Yosemite Creek currently run underground. The city plans to return a section to the surface from Yosemite Marsh toward the Louis Sutter Baseball Diamond. The proposal also calls for walking paths, new sidewalks on Wayland Street, stream crossings and a gathering spot referred to as Yosemite Station.
Water reuse and construction timing
A related five-year pilot at Louis Sutter Soccer Field will test a higher-efficiency irrigation and stormwater reuse system. The department describes it as a first for the city. Construction activity is expected to become more visible in late 2026 or early 2027, depending on seasonal rains, with the main project expected to finish around late 2028.
Authorization to begin is not confirmation that excavation has already started at every listed location. The city will provide more precise timing and park-access details as they are available; residents should not assume all playing fields are closed.
