SAN FRANCISCO — October 26, 2026. Families looking for a place to play near the Embarcadero have an important clarification: Sue Bierman Playground reopened October 15, following tree work. However, the rest of the surrounding Sue Bierman Park is being prepared for a larger renovation and some fencing remains in place.
What is accessible now?
San Francisco Recreation and Parks’ October 15 notice specifically says the playground is open again. Temporary fencing around other areas of the park was expected to remain for approximately two more weeks as crews undertake preparation, including soil testing. That means the playground reopening should not be confused with the completion of the entire waterfront park project.
The next renovation stage
The Recreation and Park Department has outlined plans to link areas of the former Embarcadero Plaza and Sue Bierman Park under the shared name Embarcadero Park. Design materials describe landscaping, public gathering spaces, recreational amenities and a pavilion. The project team presented a concept at the San Francisco Arts Commission’s Civic Design Review Committee on October 19.
An October 19 design meeting does not mean all later building permits and construction funding have been settled. Visitors should follow current on-site signs and confirm any changed access arrangements before planning a group outing.
